I love Ellen Galinsky's sensible and research-based suggestions! Yes, anyone who works or lives with teens knows that they crave autonomy AND they also need limits (PLUS lots of warmth)!
Such a useful, comprehensive and informative post - thank you as a parent to a tween and someone who’s worked in education policy (focused on developing countries though) for most of my life. I love the idea of looking at this issue through a child development lens - and yes limits and autonomy are both so important! In my non-writing life, I’ve worked for some years on life skills/“21st century” skills (albeit internationally). Would love to learn more about EF skills. Thanks so much again for the great piece!
This is an excellent article with some very useful concepts.
Thank you!

Thanks. It is a joy to hear from you. You may be interested in my post on EF skills: https://ellengalinsky.substack.com/p/the-time-to-act-is-now-promoting
There is a much fuller description of Life and Learning Skills in my book, The Breakthrough Years. Let me know how else I can be helpful. Ellen
Thank you! I look forward to reading.
